Hong Kong’s main English-language local newspaper is the South China Morning Post, or SCMP, priced at $7 a copy. The SCMP covers all areas you’d expect in a modern daily, with particular coverage of Hong Kong and China news. The other local English daily is The Standard ($6), which has more of a business focus. For international news with an Asian slant, choices include the Asian Wall Street Journal, International Herald Tribune, and USA Today International. Of course the bulk of the local newspapers are written in Chinese, with popular titles including the Apple Daily, Oriental Daily, Hong Kong Economic Times, and Ming Pao.

You shouldn’t have any trouble finding a local newspaper, as there are newspaper stands on every busy pavement (that’s most of them in Hong Kong), or you can buy one at any 7-Eleven or Circle K convenience store. The news stands at the Star Ferry piers in Central and Tsim Sha Tsui also have a good selection of overseas newspapers and magazines, as do the Bookazine (www.bookazine.com.hk ) and Page One stores. The overseas newspapers they stock will typically be at least two days old though, so visiting these newspapers’ websites could be an easier way to keep up to date with news from home. Finally, if you just like browsing (or if you’re a cheapskate!), visit the fifth floor of the Hong Kong Central Library in Causeway Bay. You don’t need a library card; just walk in and take your pick from current issues of 300 newspapers and 4,000 periodicals.
