Few places on the planet have developed as fast or as frantically as Hong Kong; fewer still have its curious mix of old and new world charms.

This meeting place of cultures and civilizations continues to defy simple description. Many have tried to define Hong Kong – Pearl of the Orient, Asia’s World City and the City of Life – but no one has come close to the real thing.

Seen from afar, Hong Kong is a compact place crammed full of skyscrapers, chaotic streets and reminders of its mixed parentage. Frantic and densely populated, the downtown areas do little to dispel this, but dig deeper and Hong Kong’s array of cultural and natural attractions will delight.

It is an undeniably modern and commercial place, but it’s also one full of breathtaking beauty, some of which isn’t immediately obvious. There is a wonder to the many contradictions that you’ll see on the street, where identikit western architecture nestles next to ancient temples still serving a steady stream of locals seeking guidance.

On the surface lay the more obvious charms of the mountainous New Territories, the urban open space of Victoria Park and the serenity of the outlying islands, made all the more attractive by a public transport system as wide ranging and efficient as it is affordable.

Once you’ve sampled Hong Kong’s heritage at a dragon boat race or one of the region’s celebrated Chinese festivals, you can enjoy a taste of its renowned hedonism. Hong Kongers are a cosmopolitan bunch, as you’ll soon discover at any number of authentic dim sum joints and slick lounge bars.
