All foreigners must have a permit to be able to work in Geneva. The permit system is complex and depends largely on factors such as nationality and duration of stay. Certain categories of permits are ‘canton specific’, so you may not be free to live in a different canton to where you work, nor may you be able to change jobs for a stipulated time. A basic rundown of the permit system follows, but for more detailed information you can contact the Office Cantonal de la Population.

Permit Application Conditions

The most important step in applying for a permit is having a valid job offer or ‘gainful employment’. This includes those who are self employed or employed, full or part time, and either on a permanent or temporary basis. Companies have to meet stringent requirements before they offer employment to a foreigner – they must first prove that they have done their best to hire a Swiss national or a foreigner already holding a permit.

Types of Permit

Temporary Residence Permit (Type B): This permit is the most common type, issued to people who have a work contract of at least one year. It is renewed annually, although for EU citizens it only needs to be renewed every five years. It is canton specific.

Permanent Residence Permit (Type C): The C permit is issued to EU citizens who have lived and worked in Geneva for five years, and to other nationalities who have lived and worked there for ten years. It is also issued to foreigners who have been married to a Swiss national for five years. C permit holders are free to change jobs or live in a different canton to where they are employed.

Border Commuter Permit (Type G): The G permit does not include residential rights in Switzerland; it is a work permit for those who are employed in Geneva, but who live across the border in neighbouring France. To qualify, you must have been resident in France for at least six months. The permit is renewed annually and cannot be converted to a type B permit.

Short Term Residence Permit (Type L): The L permit is a short term residency permit for non EU citizens and is valid for up to one year.

Spouses/Children

If you have a type B or type C permit, your spouse is entitled to live and work in Geneva, and will be granted residency as a dependant. If you are not married, your partner does not have any residency rights. Children under 18 years old are included on their parents’ permit.

Students

Foreigners who come to Geneva for study purposes should apply for a type B permit. The education establishment you are enrolled with will provide you with a certificate, which should then be presented to the Office Cantonal de la Popula...
