General Information » Money » Banks

There are over 200 banks in Geneva, which roughly works out at an average of one bank for every 2,000 inhabitants. Nearly half of these banks are foreign and nine are private. As one would expect from a city famous for its banking industry, all sorts of commercial and personal banking services are available. There is no exchange control, so transfers can be made very easily and the Swiss Franc is freely convertible. The recent clamp down on money laundering has made it more difficult to open a bank account, especially for non residents. Banks are usually open Mondays to Fridays from 08:30 to 16:30, but remain closed on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.
