General Information » Essential Info » Health Care

Health care in Switzerland is of a very high standard, and if you need medical assistance while you are visiting, you can just go to one of the hospitals or outpatient clinics (‘permanence médicale’). However, medical care is very, very expensive, and all visitors should make sure they have adequate health and accident insurance. It is probably a good idea to carry proof of your medical cover with you when you go to the hospital or clinic. If you are a national of an EU country, you are entitled to free medical treatment under the bilateral Reciprocal Health Agreement. However, to make use of this benefit you should present a signed E-111 form, which can be obtained from the post office in your home country. If you don’t have proof of medical cover or a signed E-111 form you will be expected to pay for medical services upfront. However, hospitals and clinics will not turn away any emergency case.

There are no specific health risks facing visitors and the climate is moderate, but a high factor sunscreen is strongly recommended on the ski slopes as well as for water sports.
