General Information » Money » Tipping

While tipping in Dublin is certainly less of an undertaking or an obligation as it is in the States, a 12% tip is commonplace in restaurants. To acknowledge good service, some people may even give up to 20%. Whatever the amount you are prepared to part with, beware of automatic service charges, as an additional tip would bring your bill up way above the odds. You can refuse to pay this charge, if they money does not directly go to the waiting staff. You are under no obligation to tip elsewhere (hairdressers, taxi drivers, hotel porters), but many people like to hand over a few coins as a sign of gratitude. Although you can tip on your credit card, leaving a cash tip increases the chances of it definitely reaching your server.
