General Information » Getting Around » Taxi

With numerous taxi companies working the city, it is usually easy to flag down a cab at any time of the day except for a Friday or Saturday night. Then, taxi ranks are often swarming with people queuing, making waits of over an hour a regular occurrence. On those nights, you are better advised taking the Nitelink, especially between 02:00 and 03:30 when many pubs and clubs have just closed. At this point in the night, phone calls are usually unsuccessful and advance bookings are only accepted for rides to the airport.

Whether you hail a taxi on the street or pick it up at one of the many ranks, you will be charged a initial fare of €3.80, followed by a charge per unit (one-sixth of a kilometre or per 30 seconds) which typically amounts to €0.95 per km and €0.34 per minute (from 8:00 to 20:00). Expect extra charges for additional passengers, luggage or phone bookings. Drivers generally have good knowledge of the city and can usually be trusted to take you on the most direct, rather than the scenic route. Never averse to a good chat, they are often a wealth of information and always have an anecdote to share.
