Dublin is a city in which most people keep to themselves and you’re not going to be harassed going about your business. However, as in any major city, keep your wits about you. Be streetwise, especially at night and on dark winter evenings, and don’t go wandering down dark alleyways or avenues alone. Be aware of the areas that are reputed to be less salubrious and either avoid them or be on your guard. It’s advisable to keep valuables, including mobile phones and iPods, out of sight. A good tip is to always give the impression that you know where you’re going – so keep those maps hidden unless absolutely necessary.

Travelling on public transport or in a taxi is usually safe at any time of the day, but you may want to stay downstairs on late-night services such as the Nitelink – not only will you be more comfortable, but you may also avoid the more unpleasant signs of an all too successful Saturday night out.

You can wear whatever you like in Dublin and you’ll see all sorts of wild outfits going around, but like anywhere, the more skin you show, the more attention you’ll attract, harmless or not.
