General Information » Essential Info » What To Wear

It is really only the weather that imposes restrictions on what you can and can’t wear in Ireland. That said, on a Saturday night, short mini-skirts and halter-necks are common, irrespective of conditions. You may also be fooled into believing that the summer has arrived just because the sun is shining, but stick your nose out and check for that cold breeze before you head out in just a T-shirt. Stock up on rain gear and keep an umbrella handy throughout the year.

Smart-casual is usually the look for company executives and for top-end restaurants. Some clubs and bars have dress codes (see p.368), though rumour has it that it’s all down to the bouncer on the night. However, if you’re wearing runners (trainers), don’t be surprised if you’re refused entry to some of the classier establishments. In general, people tend to dress up before hitting the town on a Saturday night and while the guys usually keep it down to jeans and a shirt, the girls can be seen in all sorts of fashionable attire, whether its appropriate for the weather conditions or not.
