General Information » Economy » International Relations

Constitutional principles, such as Ireland’s neutrality and the rule of law in international relations, determine Irish foreign policy. Ireland has a good standing in the United Nations (which it joined in 1955), due to its contribution to peacekeeping missions and its support for human rights and development. As such, it has been on the UN Security Council a number of times. In its belief that it is beneficial to foster ties with international partners, Ireland strives to continually build new relationships based on respect and tolerance. These relationships are particularly special with countries like the US, where there are a large number of people with Irish ancestry.

Ireland is strongly involved in development cooperation, and private entities and government bodies come together in their efforts to contribute to and support the development of the world’s poorest countries. When disaster strikes elsewhere, Irish agencies are always quick on the scene, with the public often generously backing them with donations.
