General Information » Places To Stay » Hotels

Dubai has a vast array of hotels ranging from one of the most superlative and opulent hotels in the world, the Burj Al Arab, with a published price, or rack rate, in the region of Dhs.11,000 for a night in a standard suite, right down to the cheapest in areas like Deira costing under Dhs.100 a night. While the hotels at the higher end of the market offer superb surroundings and facilities, those at the cheaper end vary – you get what you pay for. For people arriving on Dubai on a holiday package, hotels are normally five or four star, but if you are looking for cheaper accommodation at the lower end of the market after arriving in Dubai, make sure you check out the hotel and have a look at one of the rooms before checking in. Remember that, as with anywhere else in the world, you can usually get a discount on the rack rate or published price if you ask.

Hotels in Dubai can be split into beach hotels (grouped along the coast to the south of the Creek entrance), creek hotels (offering great central location from which to explore and loads of atmosphere) and city hotels, often used by business travelers or tourists for good value accommodation with access to business districts and shopping areas. Most are located within a 30 minute journey from Dubai International Airport. The larger hotels all offer an airport shuttle service as well as a minibus service to the main tourist spots around the city. A taxi ride from the airport to most hotels will cost between Dhs.40 and Dhs.70. Road transport in Dubai is usually quite fast and the majority of journeys around town will only take 20 to 30 minutes, costing about Dhs.30 – 40. With so many luxury hotels and resorts in Dubai there is no reason why you can’t combine a stay in a central Dubai hotel with a few nights at a desert resort, such as Bab Al Shams and Al Maha.

The Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) oversees a hotel classification system which gives an internationally recognised star rating to hotels and hotel apartments so that visitors can judge more easily the standard of accommodation they will receive.

The DTCM also operates an internet reservation system for Dubai’s hotels on their website (www.dubaitourism.co.ae). This enables guests to reserve rooms online and allows them a virtual tour of the hotel before they book. Alternatively, the DTCM Welcome Bureau at the airport offers instant hotel reservations, often at greatly discounted rates.
