Tourist Police

In an effort to better serve Dubai’s visitors, the Dubai Police have launched the Department for Tourist Security. The role of this department is twofold: to advise visitors by educating them on safety in Dubai, and to offer quick assistance if visitors face problems of any sort. They act as a liaison between you and the Dubai Police although in general Dubai police officers are extremely helpful. They are calm and understanding, and speak a multitude of languages. Their website (www.dubaipolice.gov.ae) is easy to navigate, helpful, and even lists Dubai’s top ten most wanted criminals!

For assistance call their toll free number (800 4438). For other emergency services call 999 for Police or Ambulance and 997 for Fire.

Hospitals

If you need to see a doctor during your stay in Dubai, there are two options, private or government. If you have medical insurance, check out Private Hospitals in the New Residents chapter for an overview of the private hospitals. If you are happy with a government-run hospital, there is either Rashid Hospital (337 4000), the main emergency hospital for Dubai, located next to Dubai Creek, or Iranian Hospital (344 0250), a government-affiliated hospital on Al Wasl Road in Satwa. Dialing 999 will get you an ambulance, or you can make your own way there if you well enough (probably quicker). Treatment at Rashid Hospital is free for all emergencies, or Dhs.100 for a consultation with a doctor in non-emergency cases. Medicines prescribed can be bought at any chemist. Iranian Hospital charges Dhs.50 for consultation and usually offers free medicine from their pharmacy in the hospital. In case you need medical help for children, Al Wasl Hospital (324 1111) is renowned as one of the best places for paediatric care in the Middle East, government or private, and is located near the Wafi Interchange.

Lost/Stolen Property

To avoid a great deal of hassle if your personal documents go missing, make sure you keep one photocopy with friends or family back home and one copy in a secure place, such as your hotel room safe.

If your valuables do go missing, first check with your hotel, or if you’ve lost something in a taxi, call the taxi company lost and found department. There are a lot of honest people in Dubai who will return found items. If you’ve had no luck, then try the Dubai Police (999) or the Department for Tourist Security (800 4438 – toll free) (see above) to report the loss or theft; you’ll be advised on the next course of action. If you have lost your passport, your next stop will be your embassy or consulate. See below for a list ...
