Dubai is the place to be if you are an ambitious architect - the city is home to some of the most exciting building projects that range from the practical to the utterly unbelievable. Four years ago when the first of the Palm Island projects was announced, it seemed an impossible task – yet now the Palm Jumeirah is near completion and various other projects have been planned in the meantime that make the Palm look small by comparison!



Burj Dubai

Project: The epicentre of Emaar’s ‘Downtown Dubai’ development (also home to The Dubai Mall), Burj Dubai promises to be the tallest building in the world. The tower will house retail outlets, offices, exclusive apartments, and a Giorgio Armani hotel.

Location: Interchange One, Sheikh Zayed Road

Height: Top secret, but estimated around 700 metres

Completion: 2008



Business Bay

Project: A self-contained city that aims to become the commercial and business capital for the region, it will feature offices, hotels, residential towers and leisure and entertainment facilities.

Location: Based around an extension of the creek, stretching up to Sheikh Zayed Road by interchange two. (eventually the creek will continue up through Safa Park and to the sea.)

Size: 64 million square feet

Completion: First towers completed by 2007.



Dubai Festival City

Project: A huge mixed-use development, featuring housing, offices, schools, hotels, retail, entertainment, a marina, and leisure facilities including a golf course

Location: Beside Dubai Creek

Size: 1600 acres, spanning four kilometres of Creek frontage

Completion: Various elements already finished, entire project completed by 2015



Dubai International Airport

Project: A new terminal and two new concourses, one exclusively for Emirates airline, plus a huge cargo ‘mega-terminal.’

Location: nr Al Garhoud

Capacity: Once complete, the airport will be able to handle 70 million passengers a year, up from its present 22 million.

Completion: 2007



Dubai International Financial Centre

Project: To become a regional and global hub for banks, insurance companies, and other financial institutions. The site will feature offices, hotels, apartments and restaurants, and is home to the impressive ‘Gate’ building, and the newly opened Dubai International Financial Exchange

Location: Parallel to Sheikh Zayed Road, from Emirates Towers to behind the Dusit

Size: 45 hectares

Completion: Most of it by 2008
