General Information » Places To Stay » Hostels

Hostels provide by far the best value accommodation. Long gone are the days when the best you could expect was a bland YMCA offering. In the past few years scores of hip private establishments have opened their doors, many of them offering dorm beds in renovated courtyard houses for as little as ¥55 per night. Some, like the Red Lantern House, also offer comfortable doubles with en suites for ¥220 per room per night, which would be just as suited to couples as backpackers. A common lack of en suite bathrooms and temperamental heating or air-con may, however, make some hostels unsuitable for families with young children or elderly travellers. Business travellers might find the lack of phones in rooms problematic, although many hostels now provide free internet. Online bookings at a large selection of hostels can be found at www.hostelbeijing.com.
