The Olympics is driving much of the construction in Beijing. Of the 37 venues being used, 31 are in the capital and 19 are new. Most interest centres on the Olympic Green, which has 13 venues, including the iconic National Stadium (see above).

Beijing’s Capital International Airport is also undergoing massive expansion, with the opening of ¥27 billion ($3.6 billion) Norman Foster-designed Terminal 3 in February 2008, the world’s largest terminal building.

Beijing’s new subway Line 5, which runs north-south through the heart of the city, has opened ahead of the Olympics. Three more subway lines are due to be added in 2008, taking the total track length to 200km (125 miles).
