Residents » Overview » Considering The City

While many first-timers may come with the perception that Barcelona is a city of long siestas and beach lounging, the truth is a little different once you've become a resident. The city's economic expansion during the last 15 years, along with the increased mobility of European Union residents and Spain's 2002 transition to the euro, have increased competition for jobs and apartments, put a greater emphasis on productivity, and meant longer work days and higher prices. Salaries, though, have held steady, and are generally lower than other parts of Europe.

With the city's development, construction and service jobs have boomed. Also, local and regional governments have backed several projects aimed at attracting workers in the IT, bio-chemical, trade and commerce sectors, creating all sorts of opportunities for newcomers and entrepreneurs. But, you will probably need to demonstrate proficiency in either Spanish or Catalan before landing those gigs. The fallback for many native English speakers is teaching at one of the many language schools. Besides a modest pay cheque, the schools can help cut through the red tape of residency.

From a cost of living standpoint, Barcelona is not as cheap as it used to be. It's still cheaper than London or New York, but prices are always creeping up, blindsiding even the long-time residents. It's common, too, to hear people complain about the lack of affordable housing, and that young people often must share a flat with two or three roommates to make ends meet.

But, if you build up a financial cushion before you come, do pre-trip research on job, housing and visa requirements and costs, you'll be able to make a good life in this dynamic city.
