The star ranking system is widely used, and signs indicating quality and service level are posted in the main entrance. A high number of stars will indicate accommodation of high quality and usually a corresponding price.

Prices are competitive, but often depend on location, season, and increasingly, on which business conferences or cultural events are on the calendar. For a double room at a four or five star hotel, prices start around €200 and can rise to €2,500. Moderate two and three star hotels and two star hostels, sometimes called hostales (not to be confused with youth hostels, or albergues) cost between €50 and €200. For youth hostel dorm beds, budget about €20 to €25. It's worth asking for a better rate as there may be promotional or seasonal discounts. And, if you're coming during peak travel season, it's wise to book ahead.

The Barcelona Hotel Association (www.barcelonahotels.es) and Turisme de Barcelona (www.barcelonaturisme.com) can help cut down your search.
