Like banks, ATMs are everywhere. Look near banks first, but you'll also find them at train stations, airports and big shopping centres.

The ATM networks are compatible with most international systems, such as Cirrus, American Express, Visa, MasterCard and Plus. The most widely-used local networks are Telebanco and ServiRed.

Call your bank before you arrive and let them know you may make international withdrawals. This will avoid having your account flagged for potential fraud and save countless long-distance calls to straighten out problems. Also, ask about fees. Banks may charge more for ATM use abroad or sometimes even charge a percentage of the amount withdrawn.

Be careful too, when yanking out cards and money in public places. Pickpockets are not uncommon, so assume there are other eyes on you besides the bank's security camera.
