General Information » Getting Around » Air Travel

Bahrain Airport is located at the extreme north of Bahrain, on the island of Muharraq. There is only one terminal, but while the airport is fairly small, it is modern and boasts a good Duty Free area. It is currently undergoing a process of expansion, in order to cater for the growth in passenger numbers. There are a number of regional airlines serving Bahrain – with regular flights to the other countries in the GCC.

The UAE is particularly well served, and there are a couple of low-cost carriers that offer good deals. Direct flights are available to a large number of destinations, although flights to the USA will require a connection to be made in Europe, and most Asian destinations tend to need a connection in Hong Kong or Singapore.

The headquarters of Gulf Air, which was originally owned by the six countries of the GCC, is in Bahrain. Four GCC states have pulled out of Gulf Air, mainly because they have set up their own national airlines, so it is now owned by the remaining two, Bahrain and Oman. Gulf Air offers a wide range of destinations, although fares can be high because of the relative lack of competition.
