The latest National Census taken for Bahrain (2001) showed a total population of 650,000 people. The latest official estimates for 2003 (see www.bahrain.gov.bh) give the population as 690,000. Of this total 428,000 (62%) are Bahrainis and 262,000 (38%) are non-Bahrainis. The total workforce is 330,000, of which 136,000 (41%) are Bahrainis and 194,000 (59%) are non-Bahrainis. The majority of the non-Bahraini population are male workers. The annual population growth rate is 2.1%. The average family has six or seven members. A large percentage of the local Bahraini population falls into the younger age groups. The life expectancy is around 73 years for women and 70 years for men (source: UN Human Development Report 1997).
