General Information » Getting Around » Bus

The Abu Dhabi Municipality operates bus routes all over the emirate, as well as in the city. Attempts are being made to make the service more cost effective and organised, with more readily available route information and timetables. The service operates more or less around the clock and fares are inexpensive, Dhs.1 for travel within the Capital.

The main bus station in Abu Dhabi is on Hazza bin Zayed Road, and the main bus station in Al Ain is behind the Co-Operative Society. Buses between the two cities leave every half hour, daily, and cost Dhs.18 for a one day round trip (Dhs.10 one way). Fares are paid to the driver when you board, so try to keep some change ready. Contact: Abu Dhabi Transport (443 1500).

Al Ghazal (toll free – 800 2121) operates daily buses to Dubai and Sharjah. Buses depart every 45 minutes from the Al Ghazal offices on Defence Road, from 06:30 to 23:45, Saturday to Thursday. On Fridays, they leave every 30 minutes with the last bus departing at midnight. Abu Dhabi to Dubai costs Dhs.16 and Abu Dhabi to Sharjah costs Dhs.20. No return journeys are available from Sharjah, but they are available from Dubai.

An Abu Dhabi-Dubai bus service was launched in 2005. The service, known as the Emirates Express, is operated jointly by the Abu Dhabi and Dubai municipalities. The 150 km route takes around two hours; the first bus departs from the Abu Dhabi main bus terminal on Hazza bin Zayed road at 06:30 and the last leaves at 21:30; they leave at 45 minute intervals. From Dubai, the busses leave from 06:00, and run until 21;00, from the Al Ghubaibah station. The cost per person is Dh15 one way.
