Gay ‘marriage’ (technically civil unions) and adoption are both legal in Spain, and Barcelona is considered one of Europe’s most welcoming cities for gays and lesbians. Residents tend to be free-thinking and liberal, the gay social scene is huge and all straight bars and clubs are very ‘gay friendly’. In the same vein, gay bars and clubs are also extremely popular with straight party goers. As a result, homosexuality is very much a part of the Barcelona scene. The Arena club chain owns five sites around the city, and they are fantastically popular, both with the gay and straight community, for their excellent music and top locations. Whether you want some serious clubbing or a drag show, there is something for everyone. The ‘Gayxample’ part of the Eixample area is a real hub for gay and lesbian bars and clubs, but these are dotted all over the city and growing in number every day.
